Hedging

BARE ROOT HEDGING

Autumn and Winter are the ideal to time to plant hedges as they will put down some root growth  ready to burst into life in the Spring. Pot grown hedging is available all year round but bare root plants are a much cheaper option.

Preparation is important. Dig a trench the length of your proposed hedge 30cms (12ins) deep or dig individual holes and add some compost and a general purpose fertiliser such as bonemeal.

Using the guide below set out your plants along the trench and plant as soon as possible as it is important the bare roots do not dehydrate. Perhaps soak overnight. Ensure all roots are covered by a mixture of fresh compost and garden soil.  Water in well.

GREEN BEECH (Fagus sylvatica)   Green leaves changing to copper in the autumn. Holds its foliage over winter and therefore maintains a good screen until spring. Plant 46cms (18ins) apart.
